Gift Ideas for Your Favorite Painter!

Painters are special creatures with very personal preferences, often for good reason. But if you want to feed their habit here are a few ideas…

TOOLS (stocking stuffers):

Accurasee Clip - For clipping a photo reference to your easel, comes in handy!
Tube Wringer - (get the BLUE one)
Viewcatcher - Helps solidify the composition of a still life before and during painting.

BRUSHES:

My favorite brushes come from Rosemary & Co. which is based in the UK. Their brushes and the prices cannot be beat. I recommend their Ultimate Bristle line, flats and filberts in sizes 6 & 8 (among others) with long handles. For a stateside option, I also like Silver Brush bristle brushes. I personally use natural bristle brushes with both oil and acrylic paint, but if you prefer synthetic brushes I recommend Rosemary’s Ivory line or the Silver Brush Bristlon line.

PAINT:

If you’ve ever taken a class from me you know I almost always use a limited palette of 6 primary colors plus white. But occasionally it can be fun and useful to pull out a special tube of paint. There’s really no color I don’t like, but here are a few particularly sexy ones…

Oils: Cobalt teal, Cadmium orange deep, Cadmium chartreuse, Quinacridone violet
Acrylics: Permanent violet dark, Cobalt turquoise, Pyrrole orange

BOOKS:

Landscape Painting Now
Matisse/Diebenkorn
The Last Flowers of Manet

PRIVATE LESSONS:

Private painting instruction can be extremely useful for all levels of painters from beginners to more seasoned artists. It’s a chance to get out of your comfort zone, learn new tools, and get new perspective all with an encouraging mentor by your side. And yes, gift certificates are available!
