FAQ

Where are lessons and workshops held?

Lessons and small group workshops are held either at Still Life Studio or at an off-site location that will be specified in the class description.

Where do I park?

Parking is available in the lots designated for 222 St. John St. tenants and guests, both in front of and behind the building. The suite number is 142 which is on the first (not the ground) floor.

A note about accessibility (6/2023): The wheelchair accessible entrance is currently blocked off from my studio due to ongoing construction. While my studio is on the first floor, it’s a few stairs up from the street. Please contact me if accessibility is of concern and we will discuss our options.

What are your Covid-19 Protocols?

These are changing all the time. Please inquire for the most updated information.

Do you hold Life Drawing or Figure Drawing sessions at your studio?

Unfortunately no I don’t. I recommend contacting MECA or USM about their current offerings.

What are the differences between private lessons and group classes/workshops?

Group workshops and classes have a set lesson plan that everyone follows, and they meet at a designated time that is fixed. You may not know other people in the group. These classes typically need a minimum of 5 students to run and the cap will vary depending on the subject.

Private lessons are custom tailored to your abilities and interests and everything including the time is customizable. Many students prefer one-on-one instruction, but lessons can be shared with up to 2 additional students of your choice. You will know everyone in your party, and you will have some input into what we study. For a group of 4 or more, I can customize a group lesson or class just for you. Please contact me to inquire.

How do I reserve my spot?

Payments can be made in person or on my website via Stripe or PayPal. You may also send a check but please email me to let me know it's coming, and to get the correct mailing address. Your spot will be reserved once the payment has been received.

How many students are in each (group) class?

Group class sizes are small, typically between 4 and 12 students. Most classes require 4 students to run, with a maximum that varies slightly depending on the subject/location. I often have waiting lists, and you can add your name to a wait list by emailing me here.

Where should I stay if visiting from out of town?

There are many wonderful hotel options in Portland. As a tourist town it is best to book your room as far in advance as possible. The Press Hotel is wonderful. AirB&B has some great options close by. The new Black Elephant Hostel isn’t too far either, and is a great affordable option. You may want to plan on renting a car if staying farther away from the studio, or plan to use Uber or Lift to get around. St. John Street is not in the heart of downtown, but it’s about 15 minutes away on foot.

Will you create a custom workshop or class for me and my friends?

Yes! In this case you would have control over the time, subject matter, and other variables. See examples of custom workshops here. Please contact me to start planning your class!

Do you teach kids?

Most of the classes I currently offer are for adults and teens age 12 and older. If you have a child or group of kids that would be interested in taking a lesson or workshop please be in touch!

What type of paint is used in class?

I use either oil or acrylic paints in my teaching, depending on the student's preference or the focus of the workshop. Some workshops will restrict the use of oils and oil mediums so please check workshop descriptions for details.

Do you teach watercolors?

I do not. Oil and acrylic paints are are my focus.

What supplies do I need?

Private lesson fees include the use of most (but not all) supplies. Students are asked to provide canvases once we move on to more finished work. Classes and workshops will have a supply list in the description, and often supplies can be provided for an additional fee.

How early should I arrive?

The studio is open by appointment only, so please arrive no more than 5 minutes before your lesson time. On workshop days someone will be at the door 15 minutes prior to the start time so you have plenty of time to get set up for the day.

Do you allow others to teach classes in your studio?

Yes, if the timing works out! Please contact me with your ideas and we can discuss.

Do you offer scholarships?

I am always looking for sponsors to help establish scholarships for attendees who need financial assistance. If you or an organization you know would like to partner with Still Life Studio, please be in touch! Occasionally I have work-exchange opportunities available, so if cost is a barrier please contact me and I’ll let you know the options.

Have additional questions?
